Discover Eco Friendly Cars

June 1st, 2008

Trying to be climate friendly is a thing that is going to impinge on us all in the next thirteen years. We have Eco Travel, Electric Automobiles and Biological Fuels to look at now. Reduce your carbon footprint with Eco Travel.

There are also different forms of Biological Fuels. Bio Diesels are many mostly plant based substitutes to oil- based Diesels such as petroleum, diesel & heating oil. Burning biodiesel produces CO2 emissions, then again this is balanced through the fact that the plant used to produce it uses C02 in the environment to grow. Even so the eco benefits of Biological Diesels are hotly disputed, with some climate friendly commentators stating that Biological Diesel cause more destruction than good. There is 2 big breeds of Bio Diesel & Ethanol.

As the type means, biodiesel is planned for use in diesel cars. It is particularly alike to veg oil and is fabricated from the same forms of plants- oil rich sources such as sun flower, palm, rapeseed & groundnut. Bio Diesel could also be fabricated from chicken fat or oils recycled from Cuban restaurants. Biodiesel might often be tried smart in some diesel cars, but nevertheless, at present Biodiesel is much more traditionally evident in a mixture with regular diesel- regularly twenty two % biodiesel with regular diesel fuel. This mix can be tried by any regular diesel van.

Ever thought about getting a climate change friendly car? There is two forms the G WIZ and the Mega City electric car. These are many genuinely climate and green friendly travel machines; in fact they are many an environmental vision. Electric automobiles do not manufacture any C02 emissions in fact more to the point electric cars do not even own an exhaust pipe. Because if you power an eco car from renewable energy, it fabricates zero CO2. Though this electric car has numerous advantages it does have quite a few disadvantages as well. The evident one being it is an eco car and it should only do 106 miles before you have to charge the car powerpack & this normally has to be charged over the course of the night, if you’re planning on doing a lengthy voyage, this may have to be finished over the course of quite a few days.

Avoiding Post-Move Pitfalls: What to Tackle First

May 10th, 2008

Your spouse arrives home one day with the news that he or she has been offered a job transfer. The opportunity is too good to pass up, and within a short period, you’re headed across the country to begin a new life in a new city. You barely have time to select a new home, let alone consider where you’re going to enroll your child in preschool. Which school would be best for your child? Which one is closest to your new home? You figure you’ll explore your options after you move into your new home.

Unfortunately, plumbing problems greet you when you arrive in your “new” residence, and you’re tied up for a couple of days. When you finally make some phone calls, locate the preschool and head there for registration, you’re asked to produce your child’s medical records. In which box were those packed? By the time you head home, find the records and return to the school, what are your chances of landing your child in the preschool of your choice?

Moving into a new residence is one of the most exciting events in anyone’s life, particularly if you’re a first-time homebuyer. The amount of preparations required to successfully pull off a move is exhausting. When you’re moving, you’re so busy during the period leading up to the move that you’re likely to give no thought to what needs to be done just as soon as the boxes hit the floor in your new home. Unpacking just might be the least of your priorities - and yet, it’s what we tackle first because we want life to resume some sense of normalcy.

If you’ve got school-aged children, enroll your children in their new schools before you even move, if you can help it. Registration can be a stressful event, and it will take a load off your mind as well as your children’s to know that arrangements have been made for the school year. If you’re planning on enrolling your children in school after you arrive in your new home, pack their medical records in a safe, accessible place so you won’t have to search your entire home top to bottom to locate them.

Another thing you should do well before you move is to fill out a change of address form. Otherwise, you’re going to have some unhappy creditors slapping you with late charges; when, in fact, your bills either failed to make it to your new home, or the buyers of your old home decided to forward them to you three weeks after they arrived. Your local post office makes it extremely easy to change your address. You’ll want to fill out a change of address card approximately one month in advance of your move, in order to allow time for the transition to take place. If you wait until the last minute, you’ll experience a “lag time” for the receipt of your mail.

Relocating families who don’t plan ahead often find themselves without phone service for the first couple of days or more after their arrival. You wouldn’t dream of forgetting to arrange for your utilities to connected, so don’t forget the phone - unless you plan to rely on a cell phone for a couple of days. If you’re particularly organized, you can arrange for the “perks” such as newspaper delivery and cable television prior to your arrival. Many cities and metropolitan areas have local Web sites on the Internet that inform newcomers about local service providers.

Another chore you’ll have to complete immediately upon your arrival is the transition of your driver’s license and auto registration, which will change if you’re moving to a different state. While you’re at it, change your voter’s registration, as well; depending upon your city, you may be able to modify your voter’s registration at the local department of motor vehicles, enabling you to kill three birds with one stone, so to speak.

For security reasons more than aesthetic ones, find adequate window coverings immediately upon your arrival. They don’t have to look as if they belong in the pages of House Beautiful; you just need something temporary that will give you privacy and prevent a prospective burglar from checking out what your home has to offer. Speaking of security, have the locks throughout your home changed immediately. You have no idea if the previous owners distributed copies of your house key.

You’ll also want to organize all paperwork related to your new home. In the event of any unforeseen problems with your home, you may need to consult your insurance information or warranty documents. And when tax time comes, you’ll be glad you kept an organized file of your paperwork.

Unless you’re expecting guests soon upon your arrival, don’t sweat the decorative details of your new digs until you’ve taken care of such critical responsibilities as these. You’ll have as much time as you want to arrange the furniture and accessorize your home, but checklist items such as registration, change of address and most important, safety, can’t wait.

9 Tips For Saving On Fuel Costs

May 8th, 2008

Copyright 2006 Donovan Baldwin

Except for the selection of the car itself, most tips on saving
fuel will not save that much by themselves on a day-to-day
basis. However, combining several tips with time can result in
significant weekly, monthly, and annual savings, depending on
the type of car you drive, the way you drive it, how often you
drive it, and where you drive it. Almost anyone should be able
to cut fuel costs dramatically by implementing as many of the
following tips as possible.

Driving Habits: As a general rule, speed probably has the most
effect on fuel economy. Most cars today begin to lose fuel
effeciency significantly once you pass 55 mph. The faster you
go, the faster the fuel goes. If you have the option of driving
65 mph or 75 mph, for example, you will use over 20% more fuel
by driving the higher speed. You will drive a little longer
going the slower speed, but the overall savings can be anywhere
from $5 to $10 per extra hour the trip takes. While this might
not be much of a savings on the next trip to grandma’s house,
people who drive a lot can save a lot simply by slowing down,
leaving earlier, and planning an effective route.

One driving habit which burns fuel, but which seems to be common
is rapid acceleration, staying on the gas until the last minute,
and then slamming on brakes. My wife and I often comment on the
number of people who get to the red light ahead of us.
Professional truck drivers often increase their fuel economy by
“playing the lights”, that is, watching what is happening with
the traffic lights ahead, and beginning to slow down when the
light turns red, rather than running up and braking rapidly. It
requires less fuel to speed a moving vehicle back up than it
does to accelerate from a full stop, and less fuel is burned
approaching the light or intersection if the car begins slowing
sooner.

Tires: Properly inflated tires, in addition to being safer than
under or over inflated tires, can save fuel. Use a tire gauge
and check the tire for the proper inflation pressure. A tire,
particularly a radial, can be badly under inflated and still
appear normal. Proper inflation will also help insure the
longest life for your tires, saving you the costs of early and
frequent replacement, and saving the environment in terms of the
energy and resources needed to produce those extra tires.

Use Higher Gears: This might not be of particular importance to
those driving automatic transmissions, but getting a car up to
cruising speed and putting it in the highest effective gear
available uses a lot less fuel. Beware, however, accelerating
too quickly. Shoving the pedal to the floor in an effort to get
to cruising speed quickly can, particularly with older cars,
push more fuel through the system than is needed, resulting not
only in increased fuel use, but in fouling of the engine due to
build ups from partially combusted fuel.

Air Conditioning: We all used to drive with the windows down,
all the time. Use your air conditioner when it is needed, and
you could save a couple miles per gallon.

Planning and Sharing: Planning any trip can result in fuel
savings. However, many people overlook the short trips to the
mall, the cleaners, and the bakery. Maybe some of these trips
can be combined into one rather than several which require you
to leave your house, for example, and get to your destination
and then return home from where you begin your next trip.
Shopping online is also becoming more popular, and many things
from televisions to cell phone service to groceries can be
ordered on line. Many retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target have
online stores. Of course, be careful that the shipping on the
item doesn’t offset the fuel you save. Sharing errands with your
neighbors and carpooling to and from work can save a lot.

Automobile Maintenance: A properly maintained car tends to
operate more efficiently than one that is not. Tune-ups and
regular oil changes both can contribute to increased fuel
savings. Synthetic motor oils can contribute to more efficient
engine operation and last longer, thus saving on fuel costs
while decreasing maintenance costs. Learning to do such simple
things yourself as oil changes can also save a lot of money if
you have been paying someone else to do them. Such simple things
as changing air filters and worn belts can also increase engine
efficiency, thus contributing to fuel economy.

Alternative Transportation: Let’s face it. Walking and bicycle
riding have been common forms of transportation in other
countries for years. Not only that, if you have been wanting to
start an exercise or weight loss program, what better way than
to make it a part of your daily activities such as the trip to
and from work or the grocery store which is a mile or so away?
Public transportation such as intra-city rail lines and buses
can not only save money and fuel as your vehicle is no longer
sitting in the line of traffic, but the time that you would have
to spend controlling your vehicle is now given back to you. A
few years ago, my wife got tired of commuting 45 minutes each
way, sitting in creeping traffic for most of the time feeling
frustrated and battling road rage…hers and the other drivers’.
She tried the bus for a week and not only saved money on fuel
costs, but arrived at work and back at home rested and calm. She
soon had a small collection of books and tapes that went with
her for entertainment and relaxation on the trip.

Hybrids: It is obvious that choosing a fuel efficient car is one
of the first and most important steps that can be taken in
saving on fuel costs. Many companies are already producing
hybrid vehicles which can produce fantastic saving compared to
the fuel consumption of standard cars. While day-to-day driving
results are not as good, test vehicles have achieved over 70 mpg
in city driving, the type of driving that eats fuel up. For
those who can’t let go of their SUV or high-end vehicle, Lexus
has entered the hybrid market as has Ford, which has a broad
selection of hybrid vehicles to choose from.

Alternative Fuels: Much research is being done on fuels such as
natural gas, ethanol, bio-diesel, hydrogen and hydrogen fuel
cells. These show much promise for the future although they are
not as commonly available as gasoline, which can be used in
hybrid cars which are on the market today. Eventually, however,
some of these technologies will be refined to the point where it
becomes economically feasible to consider using them regularly.

Plants Your Family Will Want To Avoid

April 12th, 2008

Wild Plants That Are Poisonous

Do you raise plants in your backyard that now and them you
nibble on in a salad? Remember always, anytime you want to eat
something that’s wild: When in doubt, leave it out. Poisonous
doesn’t mean deadly all the time, but who wants to get even sick?

Nightshade is recognizable by its purple and yellow flower.
Don’t even handle a lot and then rub your eyes or put your
fingers to your mouth. Dogwood trees and flowers are poisonous,
we can ONLY EAT THE BERRIES. Houndstoungue, which looks like the
big dog’s long tounge. Wild rose plant beyond the rose hips, IS
poisonous.

MOST mushrooms. Remember they’re fungus. Actually, mushrooms
are the fruit of a fungus. Although only only about 1% will
cause death, quite a few more can cause sickness. There are
thousands of different mushrooms and other things that look like
‘em, like toadstools, so don’t eat ANY unless you are absolutely
sure they’re safe. And, don’t rely on the old notion that if you
cook ‘em and they don’t turn black, all’s well. Mushrooms do
have some wonderful anti-oxidants, like ergothionome

RED elderberries are poisonous. The purple ones are okay.
Fertilizers and soil ammendments like man-made Ammonium Nitrate,
Hydrated Lime or even natural manure can be poisonous when
concentrated. Remember not to rub your eyes or touch your mouth
while working with these materials.

And yes, like mom always said, wash your hands before eating

The Meaning of Family

April 3rd, 2008

It has been many years since we have experienced the true
meaning of family in the media. Years ago there were television
programs that offered however so gently, honest, home grown
values, beliefs and characters so true you felt like they were
family. What happen to the days of watching sincere people,
portray honorable characters and live humble lives? Is it old
fashion to still enjoy the Andy Griffith Show, the Waltons, and
the Cosby Show?

Deep inside most people there is a profound desire to hold on to
the safe security that accompanies knowing nice, sweet, caring,
none threatening people, even if they are only on television.
This may be why Oprah remains cherished in the hearts and minds
of her viewers after twenty years. She is as Dr. Phil would say,
“a soft place to fall” despite that fact we must experience her
via the “idiot box” as my dad once called it.

What we see most in those television programs is that innocent
sense of togetherness, dare I say that sense of family.
Dictionary.com first defines family as “a fundamental social
group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and
their children.” It is the second definition that is perhaps
more accurate however, defining a family as “two or more people
who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one
another, and reside usually in the same dwelling place.”

Is a grandmother living with her adult son and her drug addicted
daughter’s three children a family? Definition number one would
say no, but definition number two would agree unequivocally. In
fact we can take the definition one step further and say a
family is “two or more people who share goals and values, have
long-term commitments to one another, may reside usually in the
same dwelling place and believe that the spirit and meaning of
family exist through good times and bad.”

A real family fights and makes up, argues and agrees to disagree
and loves unconditionally. As we step into 2006 remember that
you define your family every day by your actions, your words,
your belief and your unconditional love or lack of. The Chinese
called the year 2006 the Year of the Dog, I propose to call it
the year of the family and ask that we begin to invest, build
and commit to developing loving caring families. Nothing beats a
failure but a try. Let’s try.
