Caribbean, European, Hawaiian, Alaskan, or whichever cruise you take, you will embark on a journey that will take you places you’ve never been before. Visit different ports of call, take in the sightseeing, shopping, food and more at any of the islands, relax or participate in as many activities as you can, or drink/eat your vacation away. It is all there and more when you splurge on a major cruise line and really treat yourselves to a life of luxury.

2. Theme Cruise. What about a Disney Cruise or company cruise? Your itinerary may be a bit different on a theme-type cruise. Great for family vacations, romantic vacations, honeymoons, or celebrations, a theme cruise can provide that little extra you may not find on a traditional cruise.

3. Gambling or Riverboat Cruises. If you are an avid gambler or love to take a weekend and hit up Vegas or any casino area, then a gambling cruise will whisk you away to do exactly what you love- play cards, take in entertainment, and enjoy great food on the open ocean. Why not add that extra enjoyment of a cruise?

4. Day Cruises. No matter what vacation destination you venture to, most tourist towns offer exciting day/night cruises. Fun for everyone to enjoy take your pick from dinner cruises usually with live entertainment, sightseeing tours, singles cruises, family cruises, and overall fun. You will see the sights, enjoy an array of activities, mouthwatering food, entertainment, and most importantly good company and miraculous views.

5. Barefoot Cruises. Instead of sailing off a huge liner, why not do a barefoot cruise on a sailboat. This type of cruise will offer an experience you’ll never forget. Gather with other sea lovers to lounge, sunbathe, read, socialize, dance and party from sun-up to sundown.

This is just the tip of the iceberg to give you an idea of how much fun you can have and what types of cruises you can enjoy. What if We Stopped SPAM?

March 16th, 2009

What if we could defeat SPAM? What if no one could hijack a Zombie Computer? What if SPAM did not come from half way around the world? What if SPAM did not take up so much of our bandwidth?

What if no one tried to sell us junk we did not want? What if SPAM was actually targeted, such as not sending male items to females or denture ads to teenagers?

What if the Federal Trade Commission had better tools to get these people? What if it did not take years to define SPAM? What if the CAN SPAM Act was not taken as a challenge by perpetrators?

What if we no one invented SPIT (SPAM over IP Telephony) which threatens to disrupt VoIP? What if no one used SPAM to try to steal someone’s identity? What if Phishing did not exist thru SPAM? What if we were not asking today what to do about Pharming?

What if the Viagra Spammers knew that you just have never had a problem getting it up? What Chinese Spammers did not send SPAM with a bunch of symbols you cannot read and could care less what they say? What if SPAM just went away?

What if you had back the time you wasted on sifting thru the SPAM? What if you could send the SPAM back times 10, 100, 1000 or 10,000? What if you could fight back, what then? Why do people send SPAM and why do you hate it so much?

What if the real Spam or ham in a can could sue all of them for hurting their brand name? Ah, yes what if…What if We Stopped SPAM?

Enthusiasm: The Key to Productivity and Innovation

March 10th, 2009

What’s the difference between enthusiasm and gasoline? Maybe, there’s not much difference between the two. They both provide the power to drive us forward.

The internal combustion engine of our automobile runs on gasoline. Gasoline vapor enters the cylinder and the spark plug ignites the fumes unleashing the power that can propel our vehicles over one hundred miles an hour.

Enthusiasm in the workplace, properly ignited, can propel your business into success. Motivated employees work harder. They’ll even come with ideas to improve the product or service. Motivated and enthusiastic employees are the best kind of employees to have.

Enthusiasm is rare, however. Most employees want to do a good job, but they feel under appreciated. Generally, bad management is blamed for unmotivated workers, but often, good management can still provide unenthusiastic workers. So, what’s the secret?

If your own employees aren’t acting motivated or aren’t acting enthusiastic, then it’s time to get your own “act” in gear. You can fire up your workforce in three acts:
Act enthusiastic. Act grateful. Act happy.

Psychologists tell us that the best way to change our feelings about what we’re doing is to change the way we think of our feelings. The brain tells the body how to feel and the body acts accordingly. We can direct our own feelings and our outlook on life. Writing in Out of Work? Get Into Business!, I wrote about expectations and how they can change the outcome of future events.

“If you are working on a proposal for a client, imagine that client as ecstatic about your proposal. What does the client like about it? Why does he or she like it? How will you handle your successful presentation? Visualize all of the positive aspects of your presentation. Then work on your successful proposal.”

We should see events as being successful. We then act accordingly as we work towards that success. If we tell ourselves that we are going to be successful, we begin to believe it. We can see it. We can feel it. We can plan for it. Those expectations drive us forward with enthusiastic zeal. It’s the same with our employees. We need to see them as successful and they need to see that managers see them as successful. Successful workers are motivated and enthusiastic about their jobs.

“Drive your horse with oats, not with a whip.”

— Jewish proverb

Here are six ways we can fire up unmotivated and under enthusiastic workers:

THE TIME IS NOW

When you see someone doing a good job, the time to tell them about it is right then. Don’t wait for tomorrow or next week. Who knows? You might forget about it. If you tell someone they are doing a good job, they won’t forget about it.

LET YOUR FEELINGS SHOW

Don’t be an old stone face. Everyone has feelings. Show yours. If your workers are doing a great job, then shouldn’t you be excited? Shouldn’t you be proud? Let those emotions show on your face. Share your enthusiastic feelings. Your feelings will boost moral and encourage the same feeling among your workers.

GIVE A PAT ON THE BACK

An old friend and I were talking about our days as Jaycees. We both had boxes of trophies and plaques in our basements from over twenty years ago. The tangible evidence of achievement was stored away, but the feelings of being appreciated had stayed with us. Awards and accolades should always be given out in front of people. Everyone shares the appreciation that way. They applaud, they cheer, they laugh. . . and they in turn congratulate the recipient afterwards. Awards and accolades keep on giving. Recognition comes in a variety of guises. A pat on the back, a kind word, a certificate to hang on the wall, or a trophy to put on the mantel — all build enthusiasm.

HERE’S THE BALL

Nothing builds enthusiasm like trust. When you give someone a task to accomplish it shows that you believe in them. If you believe in them, can they believe any less? You don’t even have to make encouraging statements. The task alone speaks volumes.

PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS

Think of new ways to show trust and enthusiasm. Send a postcard. Tell others about the great job being done by someone in your department. Drop names and achievements at meetings, in newsletters, in general conversation. Find ways to spread the word and encourage motivation, enthusiasm and appreciation for a job well done.

Restauranteur and author Bob Farrell knows that cheering employees on in an enthusiastic way, builds their enthusiasm. In his book Give ‘em the Pickle Bob writes about using appreciation to help build enthusiasm and motivation.

” . . . being a cheerleader involves more than leading in cheers. Whenever I eat in one of our own restaurants I always try to go back to the kitchen and thank everyone for providing me with such a wonderful meal. I walk around the entire restaurant personally thanking every employee. I never eat in one of our places with my family as though I had been elected king of the hill. The people who work in our restaurants aren’t subservient to me. I know I couldn’t succeed without them, but they could without me. And I never want them to forget how much I appreciate them.”

As you start encouraging others in a quest to build enthusiasm, you’ll also notice a change in yourself. You will become more enthusiastic and more motivated. Your clients, co-workers, and even your family will notice the difference. Life is fun. Business is exciting. Work is something to be motivated about. Filled with enthusiasm your business engine should be hitting on all cylinders.

Copper And Your Health

March 9th, 2009

Copper is a trace element mineral that serves a wide variety of purposes within the body, both on its own and as a cofactor, meaning it is an essential part of chemical processes that involve other vitamins, minerals, other nutrients or other substances. Although the body requires a comparatively tiny amount of copper per day, even that little bit is essential to optimum health and performance.

Copper came to be recognized as in the 1870’s as a basic part of our blood. This mineral is called an elemental because it is a metal. In terms of concentration, it is the third greatest metal present in our bodies. Copper is present throughout the body, and serves many purposes that influence physical and mental health and function. In addition to the influence it has independently, it acts as a cofactor, or partner, in many enzymes and processes, affecting a wide variety of bodily functions and systems.

Copper works with Vitamin C in the production of collagen and elastin, which are connective tissues that, quite literally, hold the body together. In addition to this aspect of wound healing, copper also has a role in the first step to wound healing - blood clotting. It also partners with iron in the making of red blood cells, which serve the essential purpose of bringing oxygen throughout the body, as well as helps the body to absorb and use iron. It is helps to make bones, working with calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, Vitamin D and Vitamin C.

Melanin, the substance that gives skin and hair their color, requires copper for its production. Copper has a role in the production of hormones that come from the thyroid, and thus is important to the body’s rate of metabolism, which in turn affects body weight. Body weight affects the start of puberty and the onset of sexual maturity. Copper has a role in the nervous system, as well. It is necessary in the creation of the myelin sheath, which protects nerves and enhances their communication. The connective tissues and nerves in the brain require copper for both structure and function. Copper also serves as a cofactor in the production of the body’s important antioxidant enzymes, making a significant contribution to the control of damaging free radicals.

Copper has a role in each of the body’s major systems and processes. As a trace element, the body requires just a tiny bit of copper daily. Adults should have just 1.5mg to 3mg per day. It is important to note that too much copper can be toxic to the body’s system. The body’s systems are basic are regulated by chemical reactions, and the chemicals in the body are a delicately balanced group.

Nutritional supplements can offer a safe and reliable means of making sure that the body receives all the nutrients that it needs daily. However, when using supplements, it is important to be aware of the upper levels of tolerance, and to make sure that your dietary supplement dosages fall within that range, staying well below toxic points and maintaining the system’s healthful balance.

Florida Camping: Walk on the Wild Side

March 9th, 2009

Florida is known for its sunshine, beautiful beaches and ever-present theme parks. What many people don’t realize is that Florida has some of the most awesome camping spots you can find in the United States. Swimming, boating, hiking, biking and more define our Florida camping locations. Let’s take a look at just a few that offer a place to pitch your tent or park your RV.

  • Anastasia State Recreation Facility is located on Anastasia Island in northeastern Florida. You can walk or drive to the nearby four and one-half miles of beaches, for your sunning, swimming and fishing pleasure. Hike the Ancient Sand Dunes Nature Trail and see what Florida was like before the Spaniards arrived. Just a hop, skip and jump away is the tourist city of St. Augustine, where you can visit many attractions like Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum or the Alligator Farm Zoological Park.
  • St. Andrews State Recreation Area is located in the Florida Panhandle. Sugar-white sands cover the beaches and meet the emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Swimming, boating, fishing and biking are popular here. Take a hike on one (or both) of the trails — Heron Pond Pine and Gator Lake. Shell Island is nearby and in the warmer months, you can take a glass-bottom ferry to the island. Not too far away is Panama City Beach, where you can walk the boardwalk and see the sights.
  • Oscar Scherer State Park is located in the south-central part of the state. Some of Florida’s most beautiful Gulf Coast beaches are a short drive away. For you hikers and bikers, there are more than 15 miles of trails to explore. Why not rent a canoe and see the park by water? If you are hankering to catch some dinner, both freshwater and saltwater fishing are great. Relax and stay awhile.
  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a mecca for all those who like to get wet. Located in the Florida Keys, Pennekamp is known world-wide for its fantabulous snorkeling and diving. Not exactly looking to get wet? Try the glass-bottom boat tours out to the coral reef — the only living one in the continental United States. Hiking and biking are also popular. Fishing, canoeing and kayaking are other ways to while away the hours.

There are over 160 State Parks, and numerous National Parks in Florida. Over 60 offer some sort of camping — sometimes full-service, sometimes primitive (and sometimes both). Oh, and there are several parks that even offer cabins, complete with linens and a view (and sometimes even air conditioning)! There are also about a gazillion private parks, although none offer the beauty of the great Florida outdoors or variety of services as do the Florida State Parks.

Why not walk on the wild side and do some camping on your next Florida vacation? Visit http://www.great-florida-vacations.com/florida-camping.html for more information about Florida camping and campgrounds.

Gail Nettles is a Florida native who enjoys introducing the Sunshine State to visitors. She also publishes the websites http://www.great-florida-vacations.com and http://www.your-florida-keys-vacation.com which feature some of Florida’s parks and campgrounds.

Be Selfish and Save the World

March 9th, 2009

Why do we help others? There is a whole lot of pain and poverty, illness and despair in the world. I can’t speak for you but I would like to make a difference and improve the quality of life for others. Volunteer work is a great way to begin.

No single person can change the entire world but you can have an impact on the lives of others in your own corner of the universe. That, in a small way, changes the world ever so slightly. Multiply that by a billion and it is a brave new world.

How many times have you heard people say ” You can’t change the world. You are just one person?” It begins with one. Forget all that nonsense the defeatists choose to fill there heads with. That’s their business. The contents of your head is all that matters.

Your happiness counts. How can you share your happiness if you have none to share? You can’t be happy if you put others happiness ahead of your own. You have to put yourself first in order to have the tools to affect change.

I don’t know how many people I have met that speak of all the hungry people of the world living in poverty. And how they dream of helping them. These are people that are wallowing in consumer debt, the working poor, just inches away from bankruptcy. They want to help others when they cannot even dream of themselves living in prosperity. Such noble nonsense.

If you want to help your family, help your community or change the world, you have to help yourself first. You have to be selfish for pete’s sake! It’s not a sin or a crime to put yourself first. You have to lead by example. Nobody chooses to follow the disempowered.

Make your happiness and peace of mind your number one priority. Once you have that you have the power to really affect change. Helping others is a wonderful thing. Look at the global efforts to help the Tsunami victims and affected areas. You could rationalize it and say that helping is the right thing to do, that contributing to any good cause is the right thing to do. I agree.

But, we are not motivated by our intellect or rationalizations. It is emotion that moves us to act. Helping out makes us feel good and inversely we know that watching others suffer and not helping when we know we can will make us feel miserable. We don’ t want to make ourselves unhappy.

If you can truly be honest with yourself you will see that beneath all the sentiment is a need to tend to our own happiness. I like to volunteer because it makes me feel good. That is the bottom line. The rest is just window-dressing. I have a selfish desire to feel good and so do you. There is nothing wrong with that.

Yoga, meditation and prayer make me feel good, too. Can you call those selfish pursuits? How about attending church or worshipping your higher power? Do those things make you feel good? Of course they do or you would not do them. If pursuing your own emotional well-being and feeling good is not what you would consider selfish, than I think that the term “selfish” is highly misunderstood.

Tend to your “self” first. Be selfish. Then and only then can you really make a difference.

Swimming Pool Safety

March 9th, 2009

As a pool owner you are responsible for the safety and well being of anyone in or around your swimming pool, and this should be on your mind at all times. It is necessary for pool users to exercise appropriate judgment and responsibility, and it is necessary for pool owners to create and enforce rules for appropriate behavior and post warnings to encourage safe pool use. A swimming pool can provide endless hours of safe and fun outdoor recreation when swimmers are educated, and precautions have been taken to make the swimming pool safe.

In large areas of the country the leading cause of death for small children is drowning, and the majority of these terrible accidents occur in residential backyard swimming pools. As a pool owner or parent, you need to very closely supervise children or appoint a responsible person as the designated kid-watcher to prevent accidents. Be sure to talk with baby-sitters, and anyone who might use your pool when you are not home, about pool safety and drowning prevention. When the pool is not in use make sure you close and lock the pool gate or the gate to your yard.

The majority of drowning or diving accidents among adults are drug and alcohol related, or result from diving in the shallow end of the pool. Don’t allow people who are under the influence of alcohol to use your pool. People take risks and do unpredictable things when under the influence of alcohol. Designate your swimming pool an Alcohol-Free Zone to avoid tragic accidents.

Diving should not be allowed in any above-ground or on-ground swimming pool. A diving board will simply encourage diving, and should never be installed on an above-ground or on-ground pool. Warning decals and signs should be posted at your above-ground or on-ground pool to warm swimmers of the danger. “DANGER NO DIVING” decals are packaged inside the carton with any new above ground swimming pool or replacement above ground swimming pool liner. All commercial swimming pools are required to clearly mark the depth of a swimming pool at several points on the deck directly next to the pool. It is strongly suggested that in ground pool owners also very clearly mark the depth, or at least mark the shallow end of the pool, to warn swimmers entering the pool.

Entrapment by the suction of main drains and other suction fittings may be another potential drowning hazard. In recent years there have been several advances in main drain cover design, and pool builders have the ability to install more than one main drain. This should completely eliminate the hazard of entrapment accidents, but unfortunately swimmers are still being killed and injured every year by outdated equipment. As these new technologies become available pool owners need to quickly retrofit their pool if at all possible. An inexpensive and easy to install replacement main drain cover may save you or the life of a swimmer in your pool.
